Civil aviation authorities ordered the closure of British airspace for the country as of noon on Thursday to protect the aircraft from a high-altitude cloud of ash drifting south and east of the volcano in Iceland. Closed airports and down feather to cancel hundreds of flights in a wide arc from Ireland to Scandinavia.
And left closing the aircraft on the tarmac, where the rolling cloud – composed of fine particles of silicate can damage aircraft engines – the head of the United Kingdom and Scandinavia to northern Europe. According to press reports, Denmark and Sweden also imposed restrictions on air travel.
“From today until mid-day at least 6 pm, there will be no flights allowed in the airspace of the United Kingdom controlled by other than emergencies,” said Britain’s national air traffic service in a statement on its Web site. “It has been applied in accordance with the policy of the International Civil Aviation.”
