National Day of Prayer, a day designated by the United States Congress as the day on which people are asked to pray together and, in particular to their country. It was created as a holiday floating and fixed in 1952 on the first Thursday of May, Ronald Reagan.
There have been several national days of prayer in the United States before the day officially in 1952. President John Adams, Continental Congress issued a day of prayer in 1775 to set a “time for prayer in forming a new nation.” During the quasi-war with France, May 9, 1798 as the “day of humiliation official, fasting, and prayer,” during which citizens of all religions to pray and asked, “which may be protected our country from all the dangers that threaten it.”
