See you at the pole and us again. Wednesday morning, will the students and youth pastors across the country and rally around the flag poles in front of schools to pray together.
I hate to be the buzzkill, but am impressed. And it has nothing to do with the pagan prayer to God, apparently with a symbol of the nation at the center of your collection. (Well, nothing, but this is kind of ironic, is not it?)
No, the reason I am not impressed with “See You at the Pole” is because of the huge gap between the rhetoric that surrounds it, and what’s really going on there.
One morning when I was in high school, I saw a large group of people gathering around the flagpole in front of the school. I walked and asked what was happening. Explain one to me as “See You at the Pole” was, and surprised that I went to church but do not know about it, which indicates that something was wrong in my church. (Later in life, I realized that my church did not feel the need to flaunt our faith, because Jesus said that not to do that).
I have heard one of the sponsors of young people from a nearby church, and told us how brave we are all for being there that morning, and take a stand in the way of Allah. I looked around and saw that all the pretty, popular people were there, and I think that the statement was strange because it did not take a whole lot of courage to join a large group following the lead of the popular children. This is what always happened in the school. If we look back, I think it was even more courage for me to speak about the challenge that emphasize men, or even just walk away.
